The Junior Chambers - also known as Junior Chambers of Commerce, Jaycees or JCI are a management development and community network for people aged up to 40, founded in the USA in the early 20th century. Andrew joined the Harrogate chamber in 1975. Among other activities, he served as secretary for 3 years. The Chamber was busy with projects including an annual schools public speaking competition, a booklet of reminiscences from older people in the town (to mark the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977) and a "Miss Harrogate" competition. He was also part of the team that organised a national event - the Awards Dinner - in Harrogate in December 1980. Andrew moved to London in 1981. He was secretary of the London chamber in 1982-3 and President in 1983-4. The Chamber saw some interesting projects and significant growth in membership in his year of office. The Lord Mayor is Patron of the London Chamber and they held their Annual Luncheon at the Mansion House. Andrew's guests included the Lord Mayor, Dame Mary Donaldson, and Viscount Tonnypandy, who as George Thomas was the first Speaker of the House of Commons to be heard on radio. The Chamber ran effective management training courses for local people and developed a strong public profile in the town. We were both officers of the South East Regional Group of British Junior Chamber in 1985. That year, the Regional Group was judged the most improved in the country. Eastbourne chamber also organised a national Awards Day - in December 1986. Mikki was prominent in the bid and early preparation but her move to London prevented her from helping with the actual event. In 1986, her work moved Mikki to London and we both remained active in the London Chamber. Andrew "aged out" in 1991 but continued to help Mikki behind the scenes. She also edited the national magazine, "BJC Today" for several years. Mikki became President in London in 1996. Mikki receives the award of Most Outstanding Member in the World at the JCI World Congress in South Korea in 1996. Her other awards that year included Most Outstanding Member in Europe and Most Outstanding Publication for "BJC Today" Click here or on the picture for a larger image..
We have both been honoured with the award of a "Senatorship", the highest personal award offered by Junior Chamber International (JCI). Andrew received this in 1986 and Mikki in 1996. London chamber has honoured Andrew with Honorary Life membership.
